How to recognise Quoridor
If several of these sound familiar, the game you are thinking of is Quoridor:
- A square board of 9×9 squares with grooves between them.
- One pawn per player, starting in the middle of one edge.
- 20 flat walls (fences), each two squares long.
- On your turn you either move one square or drop in a wall.
- You may block, but never completely trap, the other player.
- It can be played by two or by four players.
Other names people use
People search for it as the “wall game”, “maze board game”, “block the path game”, “corridor game” or “fence board game”. In Russia it is sold as «Коридор». Some people also remember Blockade, an older race-and-wall game with a similar idea.
Why the walls make it so good
Each wall is a choice: spend your turn slowing your rival down, or use it to run. Because nobody can be sealed in, the game turns into a battle over who makes the other path longer. That makes Quoridor quick to learn but surprisingly deep, which is why it still wins fans more than 25 years after its release.
