What is Quoridor?
Quoridor is an abstract strategy board game for two or four players in which each player races a pawn across the board while placing walls to slow down the others. It was designed by Mirko Marchesi and published by Gigamic in 1997, and it quickly became a modern classic thanks to rules you can learn in minutes and decisions that keep you thinking for years.
Quoridor in one paragraph
Each player has one pawn and a handful of walls. On your turn you move your pawn one square or place a wall two squares long. The first pawn to reach the opposite side wins. You may never trap a player completely, so the game is always about making your opponent’s path longer than yours, never about blocking it outright.
History and awards
Quoridor was created by Italian designer Mirko Marchesi and released by the French publisher Gigamic in 1997. That same year it received the Mensa Select award, which recognises games that are original, challenging and well designed. Today it is sold around the world, including in Russia, where it is often called «Коридор», and it is a favourite in schools and game clubs for teaching planning and spatial reasoning.
The game is often compared to Blockade, an earlier race-and-wall game from the 1970s, but Quoridor’s simpler board and strict no-trap rule made it far more widely played.
Why people love it
- Easy to learn: two possible actions per turn and no luck at all.
- Short games: most two-player games take 5 to 15 minutes.
- Deep strategy: wall timing and path counting give it real depth.
- Great for all ages: kids can play it as a race, adults as a puzzle.
- Works with two or four players, so it suits both duels and groups.
Quoridor vs chess and other abstract games
Like chess and Go, Quoridor is a game of perfect information with no hidden cards and no dice. Unlike them, it has only one piece type and a single clear goal, so beginners understand what is happening from their first game. That makes it a popular step into abstract strategy games for people who find chess intimidating.
